Dutch University’s environmental impacts assessment of Pangasius sector in Mekong Delta

(pangasius-vietnam.com) In 2009, Aquaculture and Fisheries Group of Wageningen University (in the Netherlands) conducted the study on Environmental impacts assessment of the Pangasius sector in Mekong Delta in cooperation with some agencies under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development like Department of Aquaculture, Research Institute for Aquaculture Number 2 (RIA2), Vinh Long province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as Van Lang University and Can Tho University.

Wageningen University’s study showed that Pangasius sector in Mekong Delta used only 2 percent of water withdrawal from the Mekong river. The sector contributed 2.4 percent to the Nitrogen and 3.7 percent to the Phosphorus content of the river; while on-land sediment recovery and recycling might reduce these substances with over 90 percent to less than 0.05 percent.
